Our Week with the Elephants

We spent a week learning about elephants in September. The kids really enjoyed it. Gymnast and Karate Kid learned so much about elephants. We measured the height of an elephant on the driveway. Each of the kids layed down and we looked to see how tall they were compared to an elephant. All three of them together are almost as tall as an elephant. We also made an elephant lapbook from http://www.homeschoolshare.com. Karete Kid’s favorite elephant book was Horton Hears a Who, which I had to read over and over and over. I enjoyed reading it every time.

I did not make up my lapbook. I got the templates from my favorite homeschool website http://www.homeschoolshare.com. It is a site with free literature based unit studies. They have a lot of lapbooks as well. Basically lapbooking is using mini books to record information that the kids are learning. You then attach them to a file folder or to card stock and put in a notebook. I like to read to the kids. Mini books give me a way to make sure they are learning something from the material that we are reading.
